The Disability Support Services (DSS) for the School of Continuing Education (SCE) is the noncredit provider for the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD) and proudly offers unique program and service options that enable students with verified disabilities to achieve their educational, vocational and personal goals.
Disability Support Services is the campus resource that assists instructors in providing educational accommodations to students with verified disabilities in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
DSS is committed to providing access to the educational offerings of SCE, facilitating the provision of accommodations and services necessary for successful student participation in programs. This commitment is based on the premise that adults with disabilities have the need for, and the right to, continuing learning opportunities and will benefit from this instruction. Instruction is designed to assist students in achieving their independent, living, employment, and higher education goals.
Students participating in IVES, C2C, and/or the Workability III program may also receive support services if attending Cypress College or Fullerton College.
Readiness Criteria for Support Services and Instruction Prospective student must demonstrate the following:
- Potential to benefit from instruction in a group setting
- Ability to successfully perform academic work independently with minimal cues/assistance from instructor
- Capacity to follow directions and to lean tasks for a reasonable period of time
- Adequate attention span to benefit from an hour of continuous instruction in a setting with distractions
- Sufficient language comprehension skills to benefit from the educational program.
- Capability of participating in meaningful classroom activities, using both receptive and expressive language
- Appropriate behavioral and emotional responses which are in compliance with the NOCCCD Student Code of Conduct
- Satisfactory level of independence with personal care and self direction, unless accompanied by a personal assistant to assist with daily living needs and supervision
Repeated absences, misuse of services, lack of measurable progress toward goals identifies in the student education contract, and/or inappropriate, disruptive behavior may result in removal from class.
